We’ve packed so much into January to have lots of fun and laughter and avoid any January blues creeping in!

The Very Talented Rachel!

We started the month with a visit from a violinist. Rachel came along and spent the morning with us playing some well-known golden oldies on her violin. All those who came and joined us in the lounge enjoyed singing along and listening to how talented she is. We are looking forward to her next visit already!

Entertainment from Green Days

The lovely group from Green Days Day Care came to visit us as they do every month. This time they performed some brilliant singing and dancing to entertain us all. Our residents enjoyed joining in too, and we then finished off with some lovely refreshments before they had to head back!

Cookery Classes

Our residents love taking part in our weekly cookery classes. They weigh out their ingredients, mix their mixtures and pour them into the cases and tins all by themselves. It’s great therapy for everyone! Our residents get to choose each week what they would like to bake so this month we have been baking muffins, fairy cakes, flans, pizza and bread. Everyone then enjoys eating them, along with a lovely cup of tea or coffee.

Flexercise

Our weekly Flexercise sessions are still a much-loved activity. It’s great to keep active! We use weights, balls and a peddle bike to help create a stimulating environment. Head over to our Facebook page (The Firs Nursing Home) where you will see our lovely residents having a cycle with the peddle bike. After each Flexercise session, we like to exercise our memories with a trivia quiz or to name something beginning with A and then go all the way through to Z!

Well done to Cliff!

A massive well-done to Cliff who has spent a long 8-month period making a cushion cover using latch hook crafting, he is so chuffed with himself and so are we! He is now onto his next project making another one. We will keep you posted on how he is getting on with it – again, there are photos on the Facebook page!

Valentine’s Day Activities

We have started prepping for Valentine’s Day during our arts and crafts sessions. We have a light up blossom tree in the main hall where everyone can hang a heart with their choice of message on it in

memory of a loved one who has sadly passed or someone who is still here with us. Our residents enjoyed cutting out the hearts, looping ribbons through them and writing their own messages. It really does look beautiful!

Student Volunteering

The lovely students from Taunton School are still enjoying their volunteering visits to us three times a week, and our residents enjoy having them visit too. The students love to go around to each resident and have a little chat, reminisce past times, play games and just enjoy great company. We hope to visit them at school again this year once the weather gets a bit better – those who came along last year for a tour around the school really enjoyed it.

Changes around the Home

Our home is still undergoing some considerable changes. We have had new flooring laid and our handyman Jason has been very busy doing a lot of repainting too. We now have different coloured wings/areas in our home along with names to coordinate with the colours to help everyone navigate around the building easier. Our wing names are: Bluebell Way, Poppy Corner, Lavender Lane and Sunflower Drive.

Our activity lounge is also now fully complete with new flooring, and lots of activity equipment to keep everyone entertained. The main lounge has had new flooring fitted, new furniture, a quiet area with a bookshelf full of books and a fish tank for those who wish to sit and relax, either in their own company or with family and friends.

Our dining room has also had some significant changes with new flooring, new tables, tub chairs and a menu board up on the wall so all can see what they are having for lunch whilst sat around the tables.

We now also have a hair salon too! This has been fully decorated in a lovely grey and yellow – bright and cheerful and is complete with hooded dryers and a fitted hairdressing sink. Nadine, our hairdresser, visits every Wednesday and our residents love visiting the salon to have their hair done as it makes them feel great.

January’s birthdays! This month we celebrated Marian’s birthday with a beautiful cake baked by our kitchen staff!
