Tamsin Forde – Clinical Manager

“The care staff are so lovely and kind. My Aunt is very happy, in fact, I have not seen her so happy in years. The Manager and his admin are always there to help with a smile on their faces”. CW – Resident’s Niece

“I need to thank the manager of the Firs for showing myself and my family around. When we visited we were unsure of the best place for Mum in her last few weeks, but when we met the manager, he took all our concerns and talked them through. The Firs is very homely and is under-going decoration but it only took us 10 minutes as a family to pick The Firs for Mum. She was there 2 weeks and I can’t thank the staff enough. I know mum was happy there“. RC – Resident’s Son

Personal Message from the Manager

My name is Meghann Bowden. I have the privilege of calling myself the Manager of this family-run Nursing Home in Taunton. The Firs Nursing Home.

I come from a background of care across all roles. I have built my career with hands-on experience to hold this post at The Firs Nursing Home. I am forever continuing to learn and develop my skills. My passion is quality assurance. We look to continuously develop our quality of care and always look to learn, grow and improve as a team. I can assure you that we will never stop learning and improving together. I pride myself on listening to feedback from relatives and residents and implementing new suggestions.

My team make you feel part of the family. Nothing is too much to ask. Our motto here is ‘If it is ok for your Mum or Dad, it’s ok for our residents’. We pride ourselves on delivering that homely family feel to our residents. We encourage them to redecorate their rooms and have input in the care planning process.

Engaging activities are at the core of what we do here at The Firs. Stimulating minds and bodies for the wellbeing, enjoyment and satisfaction of all residents.

For example we have teamed up with Taunton Chaplains. They are happy to attend and do regular communions and songs of praise. Kindly, they will also come and talk one to one with our residents. There is much more on offer. Our in-house activity team pride themselves on adapting to the wishes of the residents. Sometimes, this is one to one time or changing activities according to wishes and preference. Let us know your hobbies and interests.

We have a beautiful garden that residents are encouraged to use. It brings such joy to sit out and bask in the sunshine – it is a sun trap! Its lovely to sit out and have tea and biscuits with new friends or invite the family.

Here at The Firs we are offering safe visiting according to government guidance. With our added safety measures, we have put in place, we are proud to offer face to face visits for our residents.

Here at The Firs we pride ourselves on the level of nutrition provided for our residents. Our group nutrition policy is formed by two main factors: quality and choice. We deliver this daily with three freshly prepared, home cooked meals, that have been chosen by our residents.

Our residents love our tea trolley, always filled with cake and biscuits.

All allergens are catered for, discussions around nutritional requirements will be discussed before coming into the home. Our chef will meet with new resident on their day of admission to go through dietary requirements and likes and dislikes.

We use an online tool to complete all our quality assurance. It includes management tools including rota’s, invoicing, and recruitment.

The company strives on keeping up to date with technology. We strive to continue developing the use of technology in the homes to the benefit of all.

Bedrooms have all the necessary furniture and include clinical profiling beds. We also have call bell units in all communal and bedroom settings.

All bedrooms have TV ariel points and BT phone lines. Residents can have a private phone line in their room.

Our Rooms

We have a variety of rooms to offer. We have both standard rooms with communal bathrooms and rooms with en-suite facilities.

Prices range from £950 – £1200 per week. The rate includes all facilities, Wi-Fi, laundry, meals, snacks and in house activities.

This variance is down to the room. For example, rooms with private bathroom facility, or additional room requirements due to residents need. We call this a resident’s dependency.

Quoted prices quoted are not guaranteed until we have met the individual and gathered information on their care or nursing needs. Only then will a quote be produced.

When a new resident comes in, we will apply for Funded Nursing Care (FNC). It is a top-up that the home receives on top of the weekly charge. A nurse accessor would come to visit and access the resident’s needs for Nursing. If they are deemed eligible, funding is granted. The FNC entitlement does not come off the weekly fee – this is explained further in the contract.

A pre-admission assessment is completed by the Registered Manager or a Registered Nurse employed by The Firs Nursing Home.
