August at The Firs Nursing Home in Taunton.  It’s been another busy month here at The Firs and we have celebrated being able to have garden visits and seeing loved ones again!  www.golden-care.co.uk/homes/thefirs/

Preparing for the arrival of the chickens!

We have been excitedly prepping for the arrival of our therapy chickens.

Jo, our Activities Coordinator here at The Firs Nursing Home in Taunton, has been very busy.  In her own time at home Jo has converted a children’s wendy house into a coop fit for our chickens to enjoy! We would also like to thank Jason our maintenance man and Tracey, our Activities Assistant for helping to prepare an area in the garden and for putting up a picket fence to keep them all safe. Another thank you goes to Alick our gardener who kindly painted the fence a lovely cream colour. It has all come together brilliantly and looks fabulous! The residents are delighted with it and cannot wait for the chickens to arrive!

Firs chaplain from Wellsprings Chapel

We are delighted to have Frances back visiting us every week. Our residents enjoy sitting with her and playing Scrabble, doing quizzes, bible readings and having a general chit chat! Frances is also here for anyone including staff members and resident family members who would like to have a chat about anything.

“I like playing scrabble with Frances, it’s my favourite game!” – Theresa (resident)

“I like listening to Frances talk about her daily life and I like how she enjoys listening to me,” – Mary (resident)

Tuck shop

Due to the times we are in, the residents are currently unable to go to the shop to buy themselves a treat so it’s great to be able to have a tuck shop within the home where both staff and our residents are able to buy anything treat wise from the shelves! All money raised goes into our residents’ funds for activities. We supply a variety of drinks, ice creams, chocolate, cakes, sweets, pot noodles and much more. It gives our residents some of independence and they love to be able to pick and choose and pay themselves without having to rely on anyone else.

“I like to buy myself a chocolate ice cream as a treat!” – Marian (resident)

Activities at The Firs Nursing Home in Taunton

Our residents have had so much fun sewing their own seeds and potting them up and displaying them in the garden and we can’t wait until they come into flower! We have also been making cards for loved ones during crafts sessions and conducting our usual weekly cookery classes, therapy colouring, puzzles, word games, book reading, clay making and pebble painting!

Arrival of our therapy chickens

Chickens at The Firs Nursing Home in TauntonBantoms at The Firs Nursing Home in Taunton

Thank you so much to Sue, a relative of Tracey who hatched us some beautiful lemon pekin bantams! They are currently 5 weeks old and our residents are in love! The chickens are settling in really well and are getting handled with lots of strokes and cuddles every day! Our resident Ann is a farmer’s daughter and she likes to get them out of bed every morning and put them back to bed at night. She handles them really well and says, “it takes me back to the days I lived on the farm looking after all the animals and now look at me – I have 4 chickens to look after!”

The chickens have been great therapy for our residents especially our patients with dementia. The chickens help our residents to feel calm and are great company and a trip down memory lane for those who used to own chickens in past times.
