We’ve had a super month as always, packed with activities and fun!
We’ve been doing a lot of baking over the month! The residents have been busy making shortbread biscuits, which were delicious! Baking days always spark a lot of conversation about old recipes and memories of parents’ and grandparents’ cooking. One of our residents told us of a recipe she used to bake going back around 70 years ago. She used to make pastry cheese sticks so we found a recipe and showed it to her and promised we would make them together the following week.
We assisted with grating the cheese and then she took over rolling and twisting, asking for egg wash, so they went a nice golden brown. We had them on our afternoon tea trolley, and they were delicious! Everybody commented on how cheesy and tasty they were – needless to say; this made her day!
We have also still been having regular visits from Llanyravon Primary School, which is always a delight and have been mixing in Game Days as well as the children reading their schoolbooks to the
residents. We have had the Dominoes and Bagatelle out, the residents love showing the children how to play and teaching them new tricks. One gentleman is always so eager to see the children and loves telling them tales and playing against them in Dominoes, and of course, the children love it just as much!
Recently we have celebrated one of our residents’ 102 nd birthday! This was truly amazing, and when the children weren’t coming until the day after her big day, we arranged to have a music day instead.
One of our residents’ is a very keen pianist, so she played Happy Birthday, and we all joined in. We ended up singing it twice, as well as listening to more wonderful music from both our residents’ and the children, one of which brought in his clarinet and another sang for us. It was a wonderful afternoon, and our resident had a lovely birthday.
We are already planning lots of lovely things for February so we will see you then!
